Is your phone waterproof? The truth about IP67 and IP68 that nobody tells you 💧📱
Share
If you've ever thought:
👉 "My phone has IP68, it's fine if it gets wet"
😏 I hate to tell you... you're playing with fire (or rather, with water).
Because yes, your phone might be water-resistant...
but it is NOT indestructible.
And in this article, I'm going to explain EVERYTHING in a simple way so you don't end up with an €800 paperweight 😅👇
🔍 WHAT DOES IP67 OR IP68 MEAN?
The famous IP certification comes from:
👉 Ingress Protection (protection against the entry of elements)
And it is always accompanied by two numbers:
👉 First number = dust 🏜️
👉 Second number = water 💧
For example:
👉 IP68 = 6 (dust) + 8 (water)
💥 The higher the number, the greater the protection... but be careful, there are nuances.
🏜️ FIRST NUMBER: DUST PROTECTION
This one is easy:
-
0 → no protection
👉 Dust enters without a problem -
6 → total protection
👉 Not a single speck enters
💥 This is the maximum level and what most current phones have.
💧 SECOND NUMBER: WATER RESISTANCE
This is where the confusion begins...
- 7 → up to 1 meter for 30 minutes
- 8 → deeper… BUT
⚠️ Level 8 is NOT fixed
👉 Each manufacturer decides how much the device can withstand
For example:
some phones withstand 1.5 m… others 6 m.
👉 Yes, they are all IP68… but NOT all resist the same.
⚠️ IMPORTANT: ALL OF THIS IS TESTED IN A LABORATORY
And this is KEY 👇
Tests are conducted under perfect conditions:
✔️ Clean water
✔️ No impacts
✔️ New device
😬 But in real life…
👉 EVERYTHING changes
⏳ YOUR PHONE LOSES PROTECTION OVER TIME
Almost no one tells you this:
👉 The sealing gaskets (the rubber seals that seal the phone)
wear out with use.
What happens then?
👉 They lose effectiveness
👉 Water can enter more easily
📉 Result:
A 2-year-old phone does NOT have the same protection as a new one
🚫 WHAT IP DOES NOT COVER (VERY IMPORTANT)
This is where many phones die 😅
The certification does NOT cover:
❌ Saltwater (sea)
❌ Chlorine (pools)
❌ Previous knocks or drops
❌ Prolonged underwater use
👉 In other words... exactly what almost everyone does in summer
🧠 QUICK GUIDE (TO AVOID CONFUSION)
Use this as a reference:
✔️ Rain → no problem
✔️ Splashes → OK
❌ Pool → better to avoid
❌ Beach → real danger
💥 FINAL CONCLUSION
👉 "RESISTANT" IS NOT "INDESTRUCTIBLE"
Your phone might withstand an accident...
but it's not made to live underwater.
😏 AND NOW TELL ME…
Are you one of those who fearlessly puts their phone in the pool? 😅
